Transfer Requests

There are two types of transfer requests. Intra-District transfers are for within SBUSD when families wish to attend a school that is not their school of residence. Inter-District transfers are to request a change of school district. If you wish to leave the SBUSD, you would submit your transfer request to us and then to the district you wish to attend.

THE TRANSFER WINDOW OPENS EACH YEAR ON MARCH 1ST AND CLOSES MAY 1ST, FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR.

ALL NEW TRANSFERS ARE REVIEWED ONCE ENROLLMENT NUMBERS HAVE BEEN ESTBLISHED FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.

There is no guarantee that a transfer will be approved, therefore all students should be registered in the District and school of residence.

All transfer requests must be accompanied by CURRENT PROOF OF RESIDENCY.

Please note that Nestor Language Academy Charter handles all enrollment and transfers for the dual-immersion program at the school site level.

In addition, all Imperial Beach Middle School enrollments are done at the school site level.

Inter-District Attendance Transfer Permits

Parents who have school-aged children and wish to attend a school other than the one in their attendance area, and must receive approval for an inter-district attendance transfer permit (if they reside in another district).

NOTE TO EXISTING AND NEW INTER-DISTRICT TRANSFER PARENTS Assembly Bill (AB) 2444 was recently signed into law, to take effect on January 1, 2011. Under AB 2444, a student, who is already enrolled in a school district on an inter-district permit, no longer has to reapply for a transfer and will continue to attend the school in which he or she is enrolled, as a resident of the district. The exception would be if a student’s permit was revoked, or if the student is entering grades 11 or 12. It would behoove parents and students to carefully read the terms and conditions of the inter-district attendance agreement before signing it.

Intra-District Transfer within South Bay Union School District

ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE REGISTERED AT THEIR SCHOOL OF RESIDENCE, AS THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT ALL REQUESTS WILL BE GRANTED.

Please note that Nestor Language Academy Charter handles all enrollment and transfers for the dual-immersion program at the school site level. In addition, Imperial Beach Middle School enrollment information must be requested from the IBCS office staff.

The window for transfer requests from school of residence to another school within South Bay Union School District will be accepted starting on March 1st and closing on May 1st for the following school year.

Requests received after May 1st may not be considered until the start of the new school year.

Note: Students currently attending school on an approved intra-district transfer permit are not required to resubmit a new application each year when continuing at the same school. However, a new application must be submitted when a student incurs an address change that establishes new residency outside the boundaries of their attendance area.

Decisions regarding intra district transfers will be emailed to you no later than June 30, 2024. Please do not contact South Bay Union School District prior to July 1, 2024 to inquire about the status of your transfer.
