• Dear South Bay Families,

The violent events at the U.S. Capitol this week were difficult to experience and may have brought up strong emotions for both our students and adults. In normal times, our classrooms would be powerful places to help children navigate the scenes that have filled our television screens, social media, and newspapers. Even though our instruction is currently virtual, our classrooms hold that same power. We have a moral obligation to create safe spaces to discuss race, inequities, and recent events with children. We bear a heavy responsibility to protect and support our students through crisis and trauma and consistently desire to do so in a manner that is respectful of all perspectives. It is of the utmost importance to provide a safe space for students to express their thoughts and feelings.

Educators play a pivotal role in helping students understand what events like this mean in their lives and in their country. I hope that while images of what happened at the Capitol remain vivid in our minds, we learn from them and move forward together and that our country begins the increasingly important healing process.

It is my best hope that you join me in support of that mission as we are all one educational community.

    Dr. Katie McNamara, District Superintendent
