Dear South Bay Families,
At their meeting on February 11, the Board took action on several important items and we want to communicate them to you so that your family is able to plan to the greatest extent possible. I am sharing highlights of two of their decisions.
The Board meeting included a presentation on the District’s Recovery/Reopening Plan, which consisted of a review of local health data, revisions to our Recovery Plan based on new guidance from Public Health, and options for reopening schools for in-person instruction. Following public comment and discussion by the Board, the Trustees approved our revised Recovery/Reopening Plan and to remain in distance learning through the end of the school year (June 15, 2021). South Bay will reopen for Phase II in-person instruction on July 26, 2021 (the first day of the 2021-2022 school year). Thank you to our Board for their commitment to the ever-changing science-based decision-making and for always focusing on the health, safety, and wellbeing of our students, families, staff, and community.
The Board also approved the 2021-2022 Student Calendar. The calendar includes 180 instructional days, a two-week Fall Break, one-week Thanksgiving Break, three-week Winter Break, two-week Spring Break, 51 minimum days, and 15 holidays. The last day of school for the 2021-2022 school year will be June 9, 2022. We hope that this information allows you to plan for the remainder of this school year and for next year.
While we know that Distance Learning is not the same as in-person instruction, I am very proud of the amazing work that has been done this year by our students, families, and staff. This has been a challenging school year for our entire community, and the South Bay team is grateful for your understanding, patience, and support. Our participation rates in distance learning, with the 1:1 devices we have provided for every student, have been very high. Thank you for prioritizing daily attendance and ensuring that our students continue to grow, achieve, and succeed. All students have received a Chromebook or iPad that should work well. If your student is having any difficulties at all with a device or access, the technology team is available for drive through support or via email to respond to questions and support needs.
We will continue to provide updates in the weeks and months ahead. Please stay safe!
Dr. Katie McNamara, District Superintendent
