• Dear South Bay Community,

It seems unbelievable that the last day of the 2020-2021 school year is upon us. We have faced many challenges during the past 15 months and I thank you for your flexibility, understanding, and patience as we worked through various ever changing public health orders, numerous legislative actions, and the launch of Distance Learning. The South Bay staff, students, and families worked incredibly hard and we accomplished so much success.

At their meeting on May 27, the Board of Trustees made the decision to open full-time, in-person on July 26 and the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. As you may know, Governor Newsom is expected to make an announcement on June 15, which may significantly change guidance for public schools. We will continue to provide updates in June and July to share details of our reopening process so that families have details on drop-off procedures, meal service, mask guidelines, etc.

I recently announced my retirement, after 35 years in public education, effective November 2, 2021. My teaching career began in 1986 in the Riverside Unified School District. Since then, I held various site and district-level leadership positions. Since being named Superintendent in 2013, I have been so proud of our teams and the enormous progress we have made in achievement and the implementation of best practices in teaching and learning. We have launched several specialty programs, built a new Preschool campus, and expanded resources and supports for students. It has been an honor and a privilege to assist so many students on their educational journey and to develop treasured relationships with families. The Board of Trustees will announce details of the search process for a new Superintendent in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to our promoting sixth and eighth grade students! Best wishes as you move on to middle and high school. I also want to recognize and thank all the employees that retired from South Bay this year. Your commitment to our work has enabled South Bay to grow and thrive!

Best wishes for a wonderful summer! We look forward to seeing our students and families on July 26, as we start the 2021-2022 school year!

    Dr. Katie McNamara, District Superintendent
