Lunch Child of the Day Materials & Equipment Homework Clothing Classroom Rules Birthdays Volunteers

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten! We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and fun with you and your child. I hope that you will want to volunteer in our classrooms, supporting our students as directed by the classroom teacher.  I realize that not everyone will have the opportunity to do this, but if you can we welcome you!

The following information will be useful when communicating with your child and/or planning for his/her day.

Lunch:

The students eat lunch in the cafeteria everyday. They may purchase a lunch for $1.25 ($6.25 per week) or they may bring a lunch from home. The applications for reduced or free lunch may be picked up in the office.

Materials and Equipment:

Materials for all classroom work will be provided. It would be most helpful if your child had a few supplies for homework, such as: glue, pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers and paper. These supplies will be needed throughout the school year to complete homework.

Building a sense of responsibility regarding homework begins now, in Kindergarten. Please help your child to remember to do homework and return it on time!

Homework:

Your child will receive a packet every Monday (unless it's a holiday) and it is due the following Monday. The type of work will depend on what were covering in class. Usually you will see number papers, name writing practice, letter sounds, and writing practice, and later on word writing. Be sure to look on both sides of the paper. There is usually math homework on one side and language arts homework on the other. Be assured anything your child brings home for homework has been taught at school, so homework is a review.

Clothing:

In Kindergarten the children will be sitting on the floor, climbing the jungle gym, running, jumping, and participating in activities that involve things like glue and paint. For these reasons, I suggest comfortable, washable clothes. Tennis shoes are probably the best footwear.

Please, Please, Label coats, jackets, sweaters, hats and lunchboxes with first and last names. This will make it much easier to return lost items to the rightful owners. By the end of the school day the children forget what articles of clothing they came to school with.

Classroom rules:

For many children Kindergarten is their first "structured" classroom experience. With 26 students in the classroom behavior standards are necessary. Each child deserves to be in a safe environment, and in one, which allows him/her to happily, maximize the learning experience. Some of the classroom rules are:

1. You may not hit, pinch or bite another person.
2. Share equipment and supplies with your classmates.
3. Use the "polite" words- please, thank you, Im sorry, excuse me.
4. Be kind to others.
5. Keep the classroom clean
6. Raise your hand before speaking.
7. Look and listen when your teacher or another adult is talking to you.

Each day your child will bring home a small card. These cards represent the following behaviors:
Green- Excellent behavior! (Don't forget to tell me how proud you are of me)
Yellow- I had to be reminded about good behavior.
Blue- I had some problems today; my behavior was not good.
Red- I had a very bad day; I had to visit the Principal and my teacher will call you.

Please ask to see your child's behavior card daily. PRAISE him/her for good cards, and discuss behaviors that produced bad cards. Always feel free to call me and discuss questions or problems.

Birthdays:

We will be happy to celebrate your child's birthday in class. If you wish to bring treats to share please notify me the day before. District policy is that you send to school store bought items, cupcakes, cookies, etc. We are not allowed to serve the children items that are baked at home. Please remember that you are not obligated to do anything for your child's birthday. This is strictly voluntary. All birthdays will receive special attention unless otherwise requested.

Volunteers:

We hope that you will want to volunteer in the classroom, assisting children with projects, and offering individual help. We know that not everyone will have the time to do this, but if you can spend time in our classrooms, We think you will enjoy it and find it rewarding. If you would like to assist the class but cant make it due to work hours we also need help throughout the year with coloring, tracing or cutting paper. If you are able to volunteer in class or take things home please let us know. Thank you.

Once again we would like to welcome you and your child to Kindergarten. We hope that you will enjoy this year as much as we will.
